Over the weekend, solar power generated electricity out-did coal powered electricity for the first time ever.
It happened late Sunday afternoon - when coal hit 9,315MW, and solar provided the dominant share of electricity with 9,427MW.
While this is exciting news, we’re still a far way from being entirely supported by renewable energy sources - the crossover point only lasted a few minutes, due to low demand and sunny skies.
As millions of Australians sit in lockdown, all thanks to the delta variant causing havoc across the nation, residential and small business disconnections for gas and electricity are rising beyond pre-covid numbers.
So, what’s exactly going on, and why are energy suppliers disconnecting their customers again?
This week, Project EnergyConnect (PEC), Australia’s largest interconnector was given the green light, after transmission networks ElectraNet and TransGrid both pledged investments to build the 900km infrastructure.
PEC will be the longest power transmission line in the country, connecting electricity between South Australia and New South Wales, as well as a connection to North-West Victoria.
So, what will it actually do?
