LED vs Halogen: Which is the superior light bulb?

If you’re ready to fit out your space with light bulbs, then you might be facing a big decision:

LED or Halogen bulbs?

First things first, what are they?

LED light bulbs - short for Light Emitting Diodes - produce light from currents (diodes).

Halogen light bulbs produce light from halogen gas.

Here at MPE Group, we’ve come up with the bright idea (pun absolutely intended) to compare the pair, so you can make up your mind about what’s the right choice for your space.

Let’s take a look at the stats, shall we?

EFFICIENCY

LED bulbs are super efficient, with 80% of electricity transmitted as light energy.

Halogen bulbs, on the other hand, are only 30% efficient. The electricity transmitted is in the form of heat.

You don’t need to be a mathematician to know who’s taking the lead.

COST

Alright, now this is where you need to think a bit about investment.

When you initially purchase your lights, halogen bulbs will almost always be cheaper. But don’t be fooled - in the long run, halogens will end up costing you a whole heap more, and that’s because halogens use heaps and heaps of electricity.

Why’s that? The cost of running a light bulb is calculated by how many watts it takes to continuously run for one hour:

Halogen bulbs use between 35-500 watts an hour, whereas LED bulbs use between 7-20 watts.

LIFE SPAN

We’ll get straight to the point: LED lights last over 10 times longer than halogen lights.

SAFETY

Remember when we said that halogens emit a lot of heat?

Well, it’s actually quite dangerous, as if they are incorrectly installed to combustible materials, they can cause fires in roof spaces.

LED lights are cool to the touch, and emit barely any heat, so you’re not risking any fire truck visits to your workplace.

AESTHETIC

Now, obviously aesthetic is a personal choice.

Historically, Halogen bulbs were the winner when looking for a warm and cozy glow but LEDs have certainly caught up on this front in recent times.

After a natural light? LED bulbs are a go.

Want some colour? LED lights offer a full spectrum of colour luminosities, from blue to red to green, and everything in between.

To cut to the chase: LED is the way to go.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

We’re sure you can predict the winner by now;

LED lights are far better for the environment than halogen lights.

Why’s that?

Let us put it to you this way:

Less power at home = less demand at the power plant = less coal burnt = better for the environment.

Need More Stats?

We’ve got it. At 303 Collins St, Melbourne, we replaced 150 old lights with state-of-the-art LED emergency lights with microwave sensors.
These lights dim down when no one is in the area, and brighten up to 100% when there is motion.

This change provided our client with a saving of $12,663 annually and reduced energy consumption by 54,310 kWh.
